Baby and Toddler Picks for August 2016
Best Baby and Toddler Books August 2016

This month I was super pleased to see a bunch of reviews of excellent baby and toddler appropriate board books by Kirkus reviews.  I just wanted to give the folks at Kirkus a bit of a shout-out for this.  These guys consistently review, and give high commendations to books for readers of all levels.  This includes books for babies, toddlers, and the often overlooked early reader books.  Some of these books might not be the stuff of literary masterworks, but instead possess the exact qualities of value to each phase of reading.  For example, a board book might only have ten words total, but contain superb high-contrast images, or especially curious textures, or might boast a soothing color palette.  Kirkus points out these types of qualities, giving proper recognition to baby and toddler and early reader books that are frequently passed over by other professional review sources.  Thank you Kirkus!

This month, there’s also a handful of awesome picks from some favorite authors and illustrators.

Dinosaur Dance by Sandra Boynton is sure to be a good time.  In the tradition of her beloved Barnyard Dance! (Amazon link), Dinosaur Dance! is full of rhythm and rhyme.  Even from the preview, it’s clear that the book will be a blast to read aloud.

Little Blue Truck is back for Halloween!  I absolutely love the original book (Amazon link).  This new chapter in Little Blue Truck’s adventures looks to be full of charm and delights as costumed friends gather one by one to celebrate at a traditional Halloween party.  They’ll be surrounded by jack o’ lanterns and enjoy bobbing for apples.

You are my cupcake is a sweet salute to terms of endearment for our little ones.  Illustrator (and in this case author) Joyce Wan is absolutely blessed with a gift for cutefying even the most ordinary of objects.  This is a cloth version of the book.  Cloth books are perfect as first baby books.  They withstand gumming and drooling, while serving as objects to learn grasping and offer interesting, and in this case, adorable images to focus on.  So much fun!

Seeing stars?  Professional book reviewers only award a star to exceptional books.  More than one star means experts from multiple organizations felt the book was outstanding.
