BEST NEW BOOKS FOR KIDS AND TEENS | DECEMBER 2016

INTRO

December was a truly slender month for new book releases.   In fact, I wasn’t blown away by any of this month’s tween or teen releases.  So… there aren’t any listed in this month’s picks.  frown

There’s some good news.  There are a handful of goodies this month -- Word of Mouse, which got great reviews and was authored by the famed James Patterson.  Another fascinating release is Lesser Spotted Animals, a non-fiction animal picture book for 2nd to 5th graders.  Also, book two in the popular Dog Man series is out and sure to delight beginning readers.  The Dog Man series is written by Dav Pilkey, author of the hit Captain Underpants series.

I was happy to see a couple of new Chinese New Year books out this month.  Our family is lucky to live near Seattle, which has a fun-filled Chinese New Year celebration.  We’re even closer to Vancouver, B.C., which has a huge Chinese population and, word is, an amazing Chinese New Year parade.  If you are lucky enough to live near Chinese New Year festivities, I highly recommend going.  They’re so colorful and cheerful, and with features like Chinese parade dragons, parents and kids are sure to have a great time.  Books are a great way to introduce a new activity, so maybe check out the Chinese New Year books below, or see your local library for more titles.

In other happy news?  Book releases are picking WAY up in January.  Just have a look at the book release calendar for January.  Sweet!  And we’re almost to January, right?

And that brings me to another matter, which is – sorry for the late publication of this list!  As always, the holidays are a little crazy, but bigger than that is that we’re expecting another little one in early February.  We’re trying to get about half a million things done before the new arrival.  I’m pretty sure our schedules are going to be a bit off for the next few months.  I apologize in advance.

Seeing stars?  Professional book reviewers only award a star to exceptional books.  More than one star means experts from multiple organizations felt the book was outstanding.
